How Long Pittsburgh House Cleanings Take
It’s one of the first things people want to know before booking: how long will the team actually be at the house?
It’s a fair question. You might have a work call to get back for, a contractor coming in the afternoon, or kids getting off the bus at three. Knowing the time window helps you plan your day, especially if you’re not planning to be home.
The honest answer is that it depends on a few things. But the factors are predictable, and after serving more than 500 families across the Pittsburgh area, we can walk you through what to expect.
What affects how long a cleaning takes
Home size is the biggest factor. A 1,000-square-foot condo takes much less time than a 2,500-square-foot house with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. We price and plan every clean around your bedroom count, bathroom count and square footage so the right team shows up for the job.
The type of cleaning matters too. A standard recurring clean, where a team comes back every week, two weeks or month to maintain a home that’s already been cleaned, takes noticeably less time than a first-time clean, a deep clean or a move-in clean on a home that hasn’t been professionally cleaned in months. The first visit is always longer. Once the home is at a baseline, recurring visits become more efficient.
How many cleaners come directly affects the clock. One cleaner might spend three hours in a three-bedroom home that a team of two covers in about half the time. We typically send teams of two or three, which keeps visits reasonably quick without rushing the work.
The current condition of the home plays a role as well. If there are dishes in the sink, toys in every room and it’s been weeks since the last professional clean, the job takes longer. That’s just the reality of a thorough cleaning, not a judgment on anyone.
Typical time ranges by home size
Here’s a general window for planning, based on a two-person team doing a standard recurring clean:
- 1 bedroom, 1 bath (750 to 1,000 sq ft): typically 1.5 to 2 hours
- 2 bedrooms, 1 to 2 baths (1,000 to 1,500 sq ft): typically 2 to 2.5 hours
- 3 bedrooms, 2 baths (1,500 to 2,000 sq ft): typically 2.5 to 3 hours
- 4 bedrooms, 2 to 3 baths (2,000 to 2,800 sq ft): typically 3 to 4 hours
Other types of cleaning take longer:
- First-time or deep clean: typically 3 to 5 hours for most homes
- Move-in or move-out clean: typically 3 to 6 hours
After your first cleaning, the team has a feel for your specific home and can give you a tighter window going forward.
What gets done in that time
Our standard recurring clean covers:
- Vacuuming all floors, carpets and stairs
- Mopping hardwood, tile and laminate floors
- Full bathroom cleaning: toilets, sinks, showers, tubs, mirrors and fixtures
- Kitchen surfaces: counters, stovetop, exterior of appliances, inside of the microwave
- Dusting surfaces, ceiling fans, shelves and light fixtures
- Emptying trash cans throughout the home
Add-ons like inside the oven, inside the fridge or inside cabinets take extra time and are priced separately at booking. If you have specific priorities, like extra attention on the kitchen or one particular bathroom, just let us know when you book.
Do you have to be home?
No, and many of our regular clients aren’t. They leave a key or a door code and go about their day. When they get home, the job is done.
Some people prefer to be home for the first visit, especially to walk the team through their preferences or point out anything that needs extra attention. That’s completely fine, but it isn’t required.
One thing that makes this easier over time: for recurring clients, we aim to send the same team each visit. After a few cleanings your team knows your home, your priorities and your preferences without you having to repeat them. That takes a lot of the mental overhead out of having someone in your home.
