How Often Should You Clean Your Home?

Keeping a clean home doesn’t mean spending every weekend scrubbing floors. The key is knowing what to clean and how often, so you can stay on top of things without burning out.

Here’s what our cleaners at Wexford Cleaning recommend for homes across Pittsburgh, Wexford and Cranberry Township.

Daily tasks (5 to 10 minutes)

These quick habits prevent buildup and keep your home feeling fresh:

  • Wipe kitchen counters after cooking
  • Load or unload the dishwasher: don’t let dishes pile up
  • Make beds: it sets the tone for the whole room
  • Sort mail and papers: clutter accumulates fast
  • Quick bathroom sink wipe: takes 30 seconds

Weekly tasks

This is where most of the real cleaning happens:

  • Vacuum all floors (carpets and hard surfaces)
  • Mop kitchen and bathroom floors
  • Clean bathrooms: toilets, showers, mirrors
  • Dust surfaces: shelves, nightstands, TV stands
  • Change bed linens
  • Wipe kitchen appliances: microwave, stovetop

Every two weeks

These can be alternated week to week:

  • Clean out the refrigerator and check expiration dates
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Vacuum under furniture and cushions
  • Clean interior windows and mirrors
  • Wipe down doors and light switches

Monthly tasks

  • Clean the oven
  • Wash curtains or dust blinds
  • Clean behind and under large appliances
  • Descale showerheads and faucets
  • Organize closets and drawers

Seasonal deep cleans (every 3 to 6 months)

A seasonal deep clean covers everything you don’t get to regularly:

  • Baseboards, crown molding and door frames
  • Inside cabinets and the pantry
  • Carpet deep cleaning or steam cleaning
  • Window tracks and exterior-facing glass
  • Garage and basement tidying

A professional deep clean handles the detail work on that list, like baseboards and door frames, and you can add inside cabinets, inside the oven and fridge, and interior windows at booking. Carpet steam cleaning, exterior glass and garages are jobs for a specialist or for you.

Choosing a schedule

Every two weeks is a popular middle ground: the home stays consistently clean without the cost of weekly service. Your cleaners handle the weekly and every-two-weeks tasks, so you only need to worry about the quick daily habits.

Weekly works for larger or busier households, especially with kids and pets, or homes where surfaces need to stay at a higher standard.

Monthly works for smaller homes, or for households that handle the day-to-day themselves and want a deeper reset each month.

Recurring service is also cheaper per visit: weekly saves 20%, every two weeks saves 15% and monthly saves 10% compared with a one-time clean, starting from the second visit. For recurring clients, we aim to send the same team each visit, so they get to know your home.

If your home hasn’t been professionally cleaned in the last month, the first visit includes a First Time Clean to set the foundation, which makes every recurring visit after it faster and easier. See what house cleaning costs for the full price list.
